Boston Marriott workers are on strike now, and Marriott workers in 8 other cities have authorized strikes. In Seattle, Marriott agreed with the Washington Conservation Voters to amend the WCV’s event contract with the Westin Seattle that allows the WCV to relocate in the event of a labor dispute and relieves the WCV from associated cancellation penalties. Consider asking Marriott for a similar amendment in your event contract.
Here is the amendment to the WCV contract:
The Westin Seattle is aware that WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS is strongly committed to supporting all working people. Should the hotel become aware of a work stoppage or service interruption (such as boycott, strike, lockout or picketing) due to termination of a labor contract, contract extension or new contract negation, The Westin Seattle agrees to notify the client as soon as one of these events occur. Should WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS determine that a relocation to another location is deemed necessary due to expected service interruptions or a labor dispute (including the list of other labor disputes above) WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS will be relieved of any attrition and/or cancellation penalties due to the Hotel. If a work stoppage or strike action occurs and WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS chooses to remain at the Hotel, WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS will be relieved of any attrition fees for guestroom pick-up and all fees will be waived for the cancellation or reduction of any scheduled food and beverage event and any payments previously made to The Westin Seattle will be returned to WASHINGTON CONSERVATION VOTERS within a timely manner.
If you are able to get new language into your contract, please share the good news with us! Please also sign the pledge to support striking Marriott workers at www.MarriottTravelAlert.org.
